Boat title/insurance question

Thinking about buying an old jon boat from a buddy of mine. There is no title for the boat and no way of contacting previous owners. Can I legally take this boat out on the water without a title/insurance? There's no motor on it yet but was thinking about getting just a small tiller or trolling motor.

You can probably get away with it for a while. Worst case you have to pay a fine, it's not even a very big fine. Just play stupid if you get caught.

If there's a HIN number stamped on the hull you can get it registered eventually by selling LDWF your first born. Other than that it's illegal to operate an unregistered boat with any motor on it, outside of a private pond.

You may get lucky but I have heard of people being asked for an invoice on materials, and the boat will be inspected prior to being issued a HIN.
The HIN is to a boat what a serial number is to a gun. It can be re-issued but it's a royal pain in the arse. I started this process about 6 months ago on a jon I wanted to fix up, I was asked by LDWF "how much is this boat really worth to you?"

Nope. I recently went through this with a little 8' jon boat. When i bought my property, 12 years ago, the previous owner left it on the small 1 acre pond that we have. He didn't want it. I tried to get it legal for my son to be able to use with a trolling motor in the canals off False River and was told by LDWF that I'd be better off leaving the boat on my private pond and going to Academy and buying my son a new one. Seriously. It would've been that much hassle and cost to get it in my name somehow. He could put it in the water and paddle it, but no motor whatsoever, not even a little trolling motor.
On a side note, you aren't required to have boat insurance. It's not like a vehicle. You would only need insurance for your own protection, or if it's financed of course.

I love the fact that all these good, law abiding citizens go out of their way to try and follow the law and do the right thing, and Ldwf basically tells them to frick off.
