First of all, thank you guys for appreciating my videos. Even if that dude is just trolling, I appreciate my OB brothers giving me some backup.
I already said in the video. A hollowed slug with break on impact in a target and WILL overpenetrate. It is designed to do so. The buckshot will penetrate far enough without overdoing it. Buckshot penetrates less than a slug.
It isn't but when the difference is 6" to 12-14", it makes a big difference. I want to make damn sure I get to the vitals, no matter what angle he or she is at in relation to me. I carry Speer Gold Dots in my carry gun which penetrate about 10-14ish inches depending on the length of the barrel.
Like I said before, I want to do REAL damage and not depend on the perp's PERCEPTION of pain to actually stop him. Buckshot will do REAL damage more often than birdshot will. Birdshot is still effective, but has shortcomings.
By the way, for a carbine I advocate for a varmint round, which penetrates only about 5-8". The difference is, this is ONE single projectile, not hundreds of little ones traveling as a group.
Slippery slope fallacy...
CAN be. I would rather go with WILL be, not CAN be.
I look forward to checking this out.
And don't think any of these comments are personal attacks. I like a good discussion.

Hell if we want to go overkill why are you boys not shooting rifled slugs?

And if penetration is all that matters I assume you all carry full metal jacket rounds for self defense.

I'm just pointing out that at the typical ranges inside a normal home (approx 20 ft or less) bird shot is a man stopper and can be lethal.

Gonna start trapping pigs again soon and will shoot caged hogs with a variety of loads to show comparisons.

quote:I've reread my post and don't see anything in it to support going "overkill." I suspect you're mainly looking for a spirited debate. I have no problem w/ that as a lively debate can be fun. For the benefit of those who may be reading here to get some info, I'll go ahead and address a few items.
Hell if we want to go overkill why are you boys not shooting rifled slugs?
For the record, I don't advocate going "overkill." The rifled slug is a good fight stopper, but is inappropriate for the vast majority of self defense applications b/c it penetrates too much.
quote:I didn't say that. Penetration is NOT all that matters. Yes, I want a sd round that penetrates adequately (without penetrating too much); I also want a sd round to have a good record for reliably stopping the fight. FMJ bullets have 2 strikes against them for sd use: they penetrate too deeply and they are not as good a fight stopper as are expanding bullets.
And if penetration is all that matters I assume you all carry full metal jacket rounds for self defense.
quote:Although I don't think the "perfect" home defense round has been developed, I know it's NOT a 10 gauge shotgun of any variety. For me, I'll settle for 12 gauge shotgun w/ buckshot. If someone of smaller stature or less gun handling experience might need to use the gun, I'll consider a 20 gauge youth model shotgun w/ buckshot. In a handgun, I'll go w/ an accurate and reliable gun chambered in 357 Mag, 357 Sig, 9mm, 40 S&W or 45 ACP using a load that's a respected fight stopper.

If someone can show me information or recommendations from a well respected self defense expert endorsing birdshot for routine home defense, I'd be interesting in reviewing it.
