I may be in the minority here but I am NOT a fan of children having any type of "gun" which is not utilized for a purpose and handled under the universal rules of safe firearm handling.

teaching muzzle control through repetition is thrown out the window when you buy a gun used as a toy with the intent of shooting your friends

We started playing in the mid 80's and kinda grew up with it as the technology exploded. My first gun...

It was funner to me with the pump guns. Last gun I had back in 95 or so was a 68 Automag.

Get them a spyder. Something with some antichop eyes and ramp. A hopper to keep up with the gun. You'll be less likely to buy 2 or 3 with that setup

Tippmann 98 /thread

I had a spyder that I built up with an electronic trigger and some other goodies. It's still under my bed. If you live in LA and want to come get it, your kid can have it.

I've been looking, she's buying two, and wants to stay around 250 for both starter kits. Which kinda puts the tippman out of her price range if she doesn't want to buy used. I found some nice starter kits for the spyder xtra for around $120 with a 20oz tank, o-rings, mask, and squeegee.

I found about the same for the tippman 98, but it was more like 155-165 range.

What's the big advantages the tippman 98 has over the spyder xtra?

For the average occasional player, nothing.

k. that answers it then. I think I'll tell her to get the spyder xtra. the kids are young 11 and 9.. if they really take off with it they can get better ones when they get older and have these for their friends to use.

I had just started playing competitively on a team when Katrina hit. I started out with the Spyder Imagine.
If they want to play speedball, definitely go with a Spyder type gun over the Tippmann. If they are just messing around shooting eachother/crap in the woods, the Tippmann is a better choice.

Also, the Smart Parts Ion is a nice gun for the price for speedball starters (or at least it was then).

I ran the shite out of my spyder as a kid and never had any problems with it. The 98 is the ball peen hammer of the paintball world, but you don't need a ball peen hammer driving finishing nails.

Well, they are gonna be in the woods and fields. Probably not doing speedball. why do you say the tippman is better for the woods?

They're a more rugged gun. I guess you could relate it to the 870 in a way. Kind of like the old school workhorse that just keeps going. The Spyder and other types of guns like that are made to be more sleek and lighter, all of that shite for competition types of shooting.

And its not electronic like I mentioned before so they wont have to worry about charging/battery life and such.

Get a spyder. 90% of what I did was playing in the swamp (with an e trigger) and I never had any more problems than my friends with 98's.

Buy a cheap gun and get good paintballs. Shitty paintballs will make the best gun worthless.

Either gun is gonna work just fine. I'd take downshift up on his offer and take his 98 custom off of his hands really. Gun for a case of beer or some whiskey... Everyone is happy
ETA: I'm a spyder lover, but the tipmann is a solid gun also

Gotcha. what brand of balls do you recommend? It's been so long since I played... there was only one available at the local stores when I was 15 or so.

Well I don't live in LA, he'd have to mail it to me... plus it sounds like he used that spyder alot.. and although it sounds like it's got some upgrades and I'm sure is in good shape... you don't wanna buy one for one sibling that's much different than the one you buy for the other. At least not when they are around 10.

Psh

I haven't played in a long time. All I know is I had a badass gun and shot the cheapest balls and my friends had decent guns and shot good balls. When it got cold or humid outside they were laying strings of paint while I was going easy on my suped up rig so that it wouldn't start chopping balls. On a good day I could blast the woods up but on a bad day I had balls busting in the hopper.

Yea don't do that. One of them would have a force-fed fully automatic paint slinging monster and the other would have a regular spyder from academy

yeah, I remember my gun having issues left and right with balls busting.. I was the first one in my group of friends to buy one... I got a rhino pump if I remember correctly... I got hosed cause right after that the spyder's came out. Most of my friends had semi-auto spyders not long after that while I was still running around with a pump. Sucked arse.

You musta started about the same time I did

I cut grass for a few summers to pay for all the shite I have on that damn gun that I have now. Fun times.

Get em both a cheap spyder starter kit and an oring set and they'll be good to go. The orings on the end of the tanks get trashed pretty often.
