wrong

But that does not mean that hollow points won't make it through the hide or skull of a bore

never said they wouldn't, I said the fmj has a better chance to do so. all things being equal.

quote:

So no a hollow point does not just hit the thick skin of a pig and dump all of its energy open up and penetrate a few inches.

Didn't say that either. What I said is the hide of some animals is tougher and thicker than humans, so you need all of the penetration you can get in order to give you the best chances of reaching something that will actually stop the animal from harming you. Hollow points not designed to penetrate.

quote:

If shot at under rated bullet proof vests a fmj will penetrate the same as a hollow point since the hollow point would not expand until through the solid barrier

good to know in case the OP encounters any Kevlar vest wearing critters in the woods.

OP, load up with FMJs. Cor-bon and Buffalo Bore make good options.

Why would you recommend FMJ?

Cause fmjs will penetrate battleships. That’s why the army uses them. You probly could shoot a pig through a pine tree.

You seem like a piece of work. Id venture a guess that I have killed more hogs than you ever will . And probably killed more animals with a bow as well. But keep running your mouth. Nothing bad has ever happened to anybody who approached a wounded boar. Especially in knee deep slop on all fours. What could go wrong? But thanks for the constructive input.

lol! I’d take that bet.

You dudes talking about pistols and wounded animals is how people get killed. Neither me nor my dog will be on a trail with a guy with a pistol. It’s frickin dangerous and any benefit is far outweighed by the risk.

Y’all talkin like y’all goin to war! Lol

Here’s some constructive input. Your chances of shooting you or your buddy in the pecker with your backup gun is far higher then you being injured by a wounded animal.

Meh. I got charged by a wounded 300 pound sow once and I had a 12ga with buckshot which was next to worthless. Would have much rather had a rifle. It can happen but it’s not anything I would go buy a whole separate gun for.

If I had to have a handgun for it I would have wanted a .44 that day.

Been “charged” by number of big uns. My preferred method of self defense is to step out the damn way, but I have climbed a tree before.

Used to be you could legally only carry 22 Rat when Bow hunting unless you have a permit.

And yet I’ve never heard of anyone being killed to death by wild boars. Have heard of people falling victim to friendly fire though.

Just tryin to shine some knowledge.

I was in a fresh cutover. Wasn’t anywhere to go

I agree with you that the whole “attacked by a hog” thing is just an excuse to carry another gun. I know a handgun wouldn’t have done me any good anyway. I would have missed 6 times.

I’ll be getting a .44 one day for “hog defense” though

Be hard to "shoot my buddy in the pecker" if I'm by myself tracking the animal , which I usually am. Hence the need for the sidearm. Or I guess I could finish him off with another bow shot in the dark . That would work well. And good luck eluding an animal in the shite I was in, but I agree that is the best plan if possible.

I agree , carrying a handgun (or reallly any gun) with multiple people tracking an animal is a setup for bad things to happen and I/we very rarely do.

I believe it is illegal to use a gun while tracking at night. Might be different for pigs since you can hunt them at night but I think that only applies when it isn’t deer season.

I know when I go looking for deer for people at night, I don’t bring a gun because I can’t.

Ds, that’s correct. Guy tried to bring a 38 on a track the other night. That didn’t happen.
