Man, I'm not telling you what to do, but there is definately a big gap in optics from 200 to 500. When it gets dark, I wanna know that my scope or binoculars wont let me down. To each his own, but I'm not going to leave that to chance. Here's to good hunting with whatever equipment you have

I didn't mean to come across as a jerk, I just don't get the "cheap optics" saying.
I hunted w/a VX3 for several years, it was a fine scope. But, I got rid of it. Just to get another gun and a ProStaff.
I hunted with them several times side by side. Like I said, I couldn't see 400$ difference, I couldn't really see any difference.
But you're right, to each their own. Some drive Ford's and Chevy's to work and some drive Mercedes and even a few drive Ferrari's.

True, you might not can tell the difference, but I guess I just have my mind set on this topic. Optics are one thing that I will always try to have top of the line in, as long as I can afford it. FWIW, I drive a Chevy

Why? Are they not clear enough? Do they not hold zero? Will they fog up in that crucial moment?
Actually, yes on all accounts. If you're happy with mediocre, I'm cool with you being that way.
It's like buying a ferrari while a yugo will get the job done. I mean, it's all just transportation, right?

You responded to me, but I hope you didn't mean to?

No, sorry. I was responding to the quote.

I have a good friend who had a shitty scope. With no other experience, he didn't know what he was missing.
I talked him into getting a moderately nicer scope and he can't believe the difference. He missed out on a bunch of deer because of that first scope.
I think the Prostaff is decent. The Nikon Monarch is great.
But, there is a difference in quality of clarity, field of view and light absorbtion. The better the scope, there clearer you will see, the earlier and later you will see and the better the picture.
Read a little more before you decide.

pay a little extra and get the Leupold 3x9x50 VX II and you will never need another one....I have used every scope out there and ill never switch. especially the light it brings in at dawn and dusk

The new Redfield line is solid. Leupold acquired them after they changed hands several times. I believe the Redfield scope components are now made and/or assembled in the same Oregon production facility as Leupold. Also, I bought a 3X9X40 Redfield and put it on my varmint rig and I've been very pleased with it.
+1
Just bought one for my 9 yr old son's new gun and it's really good. I have a Leupold and he has a Redfield. I like them both....for the price.

This was an interesting quote. Many (many) years ago, when living in Houston, I bought a used Winchester .270 Model 70 and (just getting started) a Bushnell Trophy 3x9x40mm. Over the years, I have killed a LOT of animals of different flavors with this combo, including a nice 8 pt and piggie over the past few days. And (I am not bragging, making a point), most of the shots were in the ear or neck, including a 193 yard stoning of an axis doe a few years ago that was facing me and suffered a broken neck right in the middle of the white patch.
That said, I borrowed a set of slightly higher end binoculars this week, and it was amazing how much earlier and later I could see with those than my current cheap optics. My dilemma, for those hunters that are a bit superstitious like I am, is changing what has worked for so long. When I got guns for my kids, I sprung for the Nikkon Monarch on the .270 WSM and a Buckmaster for the 7MM-08 and both are "clearly" brighter and clearer than my old $99 scope. I just have not been able to bring myself to change what works so well, but all these posts on optics since this board opened has me thinking I will take the plunge over the summer and spend plenty of time on the range rebuilding the karma I feel like I am giving up.
These threads have been great-there are a lot of knowledgeable people that post, and I thank everyone for sharing. A refreshing change from what the Rant usually looks like.
Good hunting!
