Haydel's DR-85 easy to use and learn on. If he gets a single reed to start he will suck, brutally honest.

Def get him a double reed to start out with way easier to blow and wont sound terrible. I started out years ago with a duck picker by DC and loved it and still use it every now and then. Still one of the easiest calls I have had to get to sound ducky.

Can't go wrong with a haydel's, especially not the dr-85.

Firstly, where do you hunt?

Regardless, the haydel's GW-01 gadwall. it's simple, and not obnoxious. Any idiot can do it and turn a head.

Double reeds are easier to blow no doubt, but if he learns on a single reed, he will be able to pick up any call and sound like a duck. The versatility of a single reed is so much greater that a double. JMO of course.
