I did this past weekend, still a little cold. We did catch a helluva buzz though

Been a few years since I've seen gators in person and seeing 5 in a small area was cool to see.

I fished reserve canal a couple weeks ago and just at the end of one dead end canal we could see 9 of them swimming around us.

Reserve Canal

God's country.

I went crawfishing a week ago today in that area. Lot of very small ones. Still to early I think.

Reserve Canal.....

For those of you old enough to remember, the numbers of mallard in that area during the early/mid 80's were staggering.

Before that whatever kind of plant got loose in there. Giant salvania maybe? Not sure. I just know they are gone now, but if I never see it again, I saw it as kid. The sky was black with them EVERY evening, and it sounded like one continouse "feed-call" in the air.....

Which is obviously not a feed call......because that's too high for corn and rice to grow (that lil tidbit stolen from Phil Robertson).

My dad tells me there were ducks all over what is now the WMA when he was younger, they used to hunt from blind river. Now you just see a few dos gris and wood ducks and the occasional teal.

People at our camp used to kill mallards by the dozen in what is now the Maurepas WMA. Downshift has a bunch of pictures. I think they blame the reduction in numbers, or better yet the complete disappearance, in mallards on salvaynia.

That's it exactly.

My best friend in high school's grand dad was a founding member of garyville hunting club. he told us we could just pull of I-10, and pirogue in, and that's what we did.

It was amazing.

I never knew how good I had it.

I used to hunt Tatoons HC with a friend and slaughter mallards in the mid 90's. I dont remember a hunt where we didnt have a limit of heads.

I've heard stories (ppl would say it was the true duck capital at the time)...the very first duck commander video was shot on what is now maurepas wma...i got to experience a fragment of what it used to be about 10 years ago when the swamp burned one summer...the following winter we slaughtered mallards, greys, and woodies back there

What he said. An they recently redid the launch and the area is well lit and very nice parking lot. Pretty short run to lake marapaus too. I find it's hit or miss...if the bass are biting it's on, if not its reallllly slow. There are a number of canals off of the main canal you can fish, as well as fishing along the interstate that crosses it.

West end of Lake Maurepas and most of it north of Blind River.

Here is the new map LINK

ETA, just a little farther west on expansion and I will be able to walk out the house onto the WMA, right now I need a boat.

We went frogging out there a few times last year, but the water was too high and we couldn't get close enough. The launch area is very nice, especially for a mud rig.
