Agreed - learning the fundamental shooting skills is key (breathing, eliminating jerks, etc.). Post site at 50 ft. should be fine to develop a strong foundation.

If your objective for him is to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship, iron sights would be better. He’d have to learn a consistent sight picture and cheek weld which would carry over to a rifle with an optic.

If you want him to get a badge and possibly have more fun without being frustrated…an optic would probably be ideal. Whatever focuses correctly for him at that distance. I have a Nikon rimfire 2-7 that was on sale at academy for like $40 that works really well for my son.

Shooting iron sights makes kids learn form better than starting with a scope. I made all my kids learn with iron sights before shooting a scoped rifle.

This and then have a look at Mueller scopes.
