It is a clumping variety instead of running - does this mean it won’t spread like crazy? The intent is to have it fill in and form a very tall and thick privacy screen but not one that is more than 7 or 8 feet wide since it will go about 4 or 5 feet on my side of my property line. Can’t have it growing onto the neighbors property.

Would this be a good type of bamboo to use for my purposes?

Don't. Just don't. clumping/running it doesn't matter, it will take over the whole neighborhood

We pulled a clumping variety out of our backyard after Gustav.

Root ball as 25 feet wide and 10-15 feet deep. heaviest poles were 3-4" in diameter and 40-50' tall. It was a nightmare to deal with.

Well good thing I don't plan on removing them .

Seriously though - I've read a ton on clumping vs running and not once did I see anyone say that clumping takes over. I've read nightmares about running, though. Are you sure you didn't pull up running after Gustav? What you describe to me sounds like running.

You’ll still have to maintain, but it’s not so bad. We have a couple spots around the farm headquarters and just take an afternoon once or twice a year and turn three Mexicans loose in there and they cull the bad pieces.

Makes a hell of a fire.

You can also cut a piece and really beat the shite out of your neighbors if they step out of line too.

Does that mean that some of the shoots just die off after a while or do you mean that it will start to spread too much?

Some stalks get damaged or diseased and die. You end up with some brown, dried out pieces in your nice green wall. If you cut them out, it looks cleaner.

Some just die. They deteriorate and fall over and it just looks messy.

We don’t have any problem with it expanding. We cut the grass around it maybe twice a month. Sometimes you’ll have a little shoot come up, but nothing bad.

Also, on those ones that die, they break off sometimes right at the ground and what’s still in the ground is sometimes in the shape of a cup. It holds water and is a little mosquito breeding ground. Might want to watch for that.

Hmm, that's a good thing to consider and I hadn't thought of that before. I have young children and I live in BFE so mosquitoes are bad around our house.

There is a a group of large bambo plants in the yard adjacent to my parents old home. It has been there for a least 50 yrs and have not taken over any other ground either in the neighbor's property or our property that is separated by a old, barely there, wire fence. So this bambo has has not spread at all.

Put down a root barrier regardless if it’s clumping or not
