ATV transmission question

Rear end of my 08 Rancher is shot. When in 2 wheel drive it sounds like a bag of nails in a blender and does not try to move at all. When in 4wd the front will still pull the bike.
Any idea on a ball park estimate for a new transmission? I have no idea about the mechanics of a bike. Thx

Could be a few different things. Drive shaft stripped at the pinion splines, axle/ring gear splines, pinion gear teeth. Will need to be torn down to access the damage most likely. You can put it on solid Jack stands and run it in 2wd to get an idea where it’s at. Check the rear diff oil too, if it’s milky or full of mud/water issue will probably be in there. Price cannot really be given not knowing the exact issue or if you’ll be doing the work yourself.

You don't need a transmission.
If you stop riding it you may get away with only a u joint.
