yes it is against the law to try and raise a fawn.
I am still tickled that the mom was taking care of it the entire time.

I found a fawn while fishing a river in MO once. It was on a shallow rock shelf/mud bank that butted up to a 25' tall shear rock cliff. In front of the the shelf it was on was 10' deep water. It had either fallen in up stream and ended up there or it had toppled over the cliff. My father in law and I got it and took it to a vet because it was litterally covered with ticks and fleas. Unfortunately the tick/flea meds for dogs and cats are dangerous for deer. He felt it was too far gone and nothing could be done.
So at the front of his property (5 miles from where we found the fawn) we let it loose. As I was carrying it toward the woodline, it was bawling like crazy. I look up and 2 doe had come out of the woods blowing and stomping. I put it down and backed out and the doe kept a set distance but parralled me all the way back to the truck blowing and stomping the enitre time. I think if I had stayed too long I would have been boxing a doe.

On our hunting properties we have four houses, two of which we use for camps (one for my parents, one for my wife, son and I). The other two homes are in states of disrepair but have chain link fences around them. The last three years we have had a doe that will have her fawn inside one of the fences and leaves the fawn there while she goes eats. I guess she feels that is the perfect hiding place for it and it will stay there until it is old enough to jump over the fence.

That's pretty cool. Quite literally a cool story, bro.

Pretty smart for an animal with a brain smaller than a baseball
