Im planning on making a road trip up to Arkansas for a duck hunt this coming season. Any OBer's have any experience hunting public land up there? What are some WMA's and NWR's to consider? Is it worth the trip?

TIA

I grew up in Stuttgart Arkansas. I would recommend these two areas. Can be excellent public duck hunting if you hit it right. Just be sure and check the rules. It's been a few years since I have been but you can only carry a certain number of shells and I believe they have to be 2 shot or larger. You can walk in however a boat will help you get away from some of the hunters. You will need chest waders. Had some of my best duck hunts in these areas. Good luck

Excellent public area when the time/weather is right...

If travel is of no matter, the black river, a feeder to the white has some public land that is not nearly as heavily hunted as the white. Only thing is that it's North of Stuttgart/Dewitt area by at least 2 hours. It's close to the Hoxie/Walnut Ridge area.

Same set up though... winter time floods the hardwood bottoms. Just take a boat and follow the river, pick a spot on the side and go look for a hole. Spend a couple of days, because you won't hit a good spot the first morning in the dark. Shoot a couple of woodies at daylight and start scouting. Look for good holes, feathers on the water, and even spent shotgun shells can tell you where ducks are getting in the timber to eat acorns.

Eta: When it's "right" it's sick.

Felsenthal and Cutoff Creek in extreme southern AR are good when the weather is cold. But when it's cold they are usually packed.

between Christmas and new years. For the last 3 yrs. myself and a few buddies make a bow hunting trip to Tensas NWR and we were thinking about driving up a few hours or so north to try and get on some ducks. Its still early but my trigger finger is starting to get the itch

Any luck at Tensas? I pass by there every time I go to Arkansas and always thought about making a deer hunt there.

They were in the Timber pretty good this year, in Dumas. If its cold, it'll probably be another great year, this year.

Went last season to hunt the Cache and had trouble with the water levels, so if you want to get in the timber and to be able to get away from the crowds make sure the water is right.

we've yet to stick one but we see deer every hunt. Last yr. we hit the rut right just couldnt get one close enough. What keeps us going back is that ts some of the nicest looking woods we've ever hunted in and you see so many deer and other things. Last year I saw 17 deer in 3 hunts, 2 sets of buck chasing does, 8 turkeys, and got 20yrds from a black bear while we were scouting. I highly recommend giving Tensas a shot. Its bow only except for like 3 weekends out of the yr. I hear how there's ppl everywhere during the gun hunts but we make sure to go during the week and all we do is bow hunt.
