Want to try and aim to build an AR pistol for my next build. I was trying to decide between 9mm, 556, and 300 blackout. And then once I figure out the caliber what would be a good length. This would be a home self defense firearm primarily but if others can lobby other uses/reasons that it can be helpful to have certain things that would be appreciated.

From there I think I want max 10.5” in length but not sure if I want to go right up to 10 or have it lower in the 7 or 8 range. Again I guess the biggest concern is maneuverability but I’m likely not thinking or able to figure out everything like maybe going too short and how it may affect the gas system or what else.

TIA

Personally, I'd just wait before I dropped too much into this. The ATF is coming hard right now for ARs, particularly the pistol variety. You're about to need a tax stamp for all of these and your mags.

This is what I'm more worried about. They can affect mags and ammo MUCH easier than they can the weapons themselves. Time to dig a hole, I guess.

Are you going to suppress it? The 300BLK was designed to be shot suppressed short barrel. You can go down to a 7-8" barrel on that and still be good ballistic wise. I wouldn't go under 10.5 for a 223. You can do whatever length you want in 9mm.

I just posted a thread about it. The FPC has obtained the draft proposal and its going to be interesting to see how AR pistols go.

5.56 on a pistol is miserable unless you use a suppressor. Go with 300.
