Is the Colorado just an empty super or do you load it with frames. I see that you sit it on another super and remove panel for bees to lower into that one.

It’s just an empty deep hive body with a metal tray that pulls out to let the bees move down to a hive body with frames.

I have a Colorado Bee Vac. It works well, but it’s probably not worth the price.

An old Shop Vac with an univeral motor and a rheostat would be simple and cheap enough and you could still use the deep as a collection chamber.

On the newer ones you would need to control the airflow instead of the motor but no biggie to make a valve and again use the deep as a collection chamber.

I may try one just for the S&G, if so I will post up how it turned out.

Need a bit of help, had a dead and a weak hive when I went to check from what I can only assume are mites.

For thiose who do not treat do you just accept the losses and move on?

Considering adding a few Apivar strips to the weak hive to try and help it limp through.

Have two strong ones left and do not want this to spread.

Anyone have an idea to what tree is about to bloom in Mississippi? Central to North Central driving to my hives today looked to be some trees with red/Maroon buds. Did not look like a Maple to me. Just been trying to pay more attention to things blooming since keeping bees.

I had a mite issue late summer and hammered them with Oxalic Acid. Killed a ton of Mites. Started feeding pollen patties lately and my hives are booming. Pretty excited about the spring.

I’ve heard good things about rotating Apivar with Oxalic Acid, but I haven’t tried the Apivar yet. Pretty sure BeeMan runs a treatment free Apairy. I just can’t do it with the mite problems I’ve seen. I wouldn’t have any bees right now if I didn’t treat. But I’m not a treatment free hater; if you can pull it off I think it’s great.

Try dusting the hive with powdered sugar. Saw that on the UGA bee site.

Who all is gearing up for trapping season? I halfheartedly put three out some old cardboard nuc boxes last spring and caught a couple. I’m building some sure enough swarm traps this year. I figure if I catch more than I want I can always sell them. When do you normally get your traps out and what methods have been helpful in catching swarms for you?

Putting traps out today. I put a frame of old comb and a cotton ball with lemongrass sealed in a ziplock. Worked good last year.

Went with Apivar and will rotate to oxacylic acid next.

The trees are likely red bud you see coloring up in maroon.

I bought 3 last year 2 nuks of gangster bees from a Vietnamese hood out in Hurley that I found very early and a nuk from a big commercial operation that claimed mite resistance, right now that one is booming while one of the others is dead and the other appears dying.

The resistant one made a far less dramatic winter cutback and can still beard the box on decent winter days.

JMHO after year 1 is buy better bees and treat for mites.

I don’t have any old black comb. I have some medium frames of wax that I git honey out of. Will this work for traps or will the residual honey attract unwanted insects.

Insects might rob honey out but it’ll work. Some of mine have some honey left in them.
