The heck with $70 bullets. It's a very sweet shooter though.

It's a shame that the caliber never caught on better than it did.

True. It's Weatherby's third best selling caliber. This is my first Weatherby, but I'd like a Mark V Deluxe in .270 Weatherby Mag as well.

I'm a sucker for unique calibers that fill a nice little niche.

I shoot a Barnes bullet loaded by Federal in my A-Bolt. They're scarce now because Federal no longer produces them. When I find them online they're $50 a box plus shipping.

I would have to look. As you know they are expensive and it doesn't get used very much.

I read an excerpt on Weatherby a few years ago. The 257 was his baby and his favorite. As for why Weatherby didn't take off I think he was 25 years ahead of his time and that Roy Weatherby liked the idea of being somewhat exclusive. He viewed the Mark V as a gun of distinction. Something only "true" hunters and shooters could appreciate and that those relative few were willing to pay more for the performance. Roy Weatherby was preaching speed and range when the average outdoorsman was hunting thick woodlots where a lever action had done well for years. Not many bought into the Weatherby mystique and the Monte Carlo style stocks seemed too fanciful for many. To this day there is a lively anti-Weatherby crowd. To which I usually point out that fews guns and cartridges are more readily identified than Weatherby and that in general the major gun makers have spent the past two decades trying to surpass Weatherby's designs.
