Anyone ever rented a camper trailer?

I want to see about renting a camper for a long weekend for me and the fam. They have shown interest in going camping at some of these nicer camp grounds and before we decide to bite the bullet on a purchase I want to see if it’s our thing. We did it a lot as kids. I always went with friends and then we got one as a family in my teenage years but it was a huge fifth wheel. Ideally I’d like something smaller 17-19 feet. If we do the camping deal i want them to spend as much time outside the camper as possible so don’t want their first experience to be something huge. Tia

I've done it before and planning on renting another at the end of April. Beats owning a camper by a mile in my opinion. The rentals are always newer and everything works. Campers depreciate faster than anything with wheels.
Dad's in Picayune, MS has a good fleet and it cost me a couple hundred for a weekend. I'll do that a few times a year.

I took a 22ft cargo trailer and put electrical, AC, cabinets, water hookup, sink, and a portable toilet with a pop up type bathroom if needed Ina corner.
Etrack all over and on floor to hold cots, chairs, etc.
Works awesome. Easy to load with the big back door. Can haul shite when needed
Bought trailer for 4k. Put about 2k in it. Easy to pull. 2 four wheelers fit.

Got started on a similar build this year. Can't wait to get it finished out. Ours is only 16' i think.

Rented one today for our family of five for the first time off of RVshare.com. Tonight is the first night for us in the RV at the Frio River. Got a one year old 36’ fifth wheel for just over $100/night. Walk thru with the owner took longer than expected but I’m set up and outside drinking a beer right now. So far so good.

Get you a fish cleaning sink and a couple buckets.
Use to wash hands out side and dishes. Drain the water into buckets to pour away from the campsite.
Also, that back door allows me to bring the propane firebowl I built. Nice to get up in the morning and turn on the bottle and click the sparker and have instant flame! Beats chopping firewood all the time, especially with kids.
Also, the Coleman cots with the padding are amazing. I got the extra long ones. They are so comfy. Expensive but worth every penny. I'm a big guy (6'4" 240) and they support me well.

Smart man you are. We like camping but I know several folks who bought brand new and then only used it a few times.
We are going this weekend and our friends have used these folks a few times and had good experiences:

We rent one in NC several times a year. 35'. Pull out. On their site and we just pull up and use it with no work needed. $50/night. Found it through VRBO.
I personally wouldn't want the expense and hassle of owning a trailer, having to have a rig that can pull it. Costs for storage (we couldn't store at the house) etc.
There are RV Rental places that will tow the trailer to the campground your want and just drop it off/pick it up.

I used an rv rental at Disney a few years back. We had several families going and figured it would be better to be at the campground. The guys we used set it all up and had it ready to go for when we got there. It was immaculate and spacious enough for 7. I think we paid 250-300/night for the camper. It was enjoyable, but I won’t be doing it again - at least not at Disney.

I prefer renting near my destination to avoid the hassle of pulling extra miles. I visit the Rockies and it saves me 30-40 hours of pulling each trip.
Have not tried the show-up to a set-up yet.

Stay away from Jayco.
They're huge pieces of shite.
Most are, be careful and do your research. As mentioned they depreciate awfully fast. I took a bath on a 36' Jayco and now I've settled on a quality truck camper. The kind that goes in your truck bed.
Now I can take my boat with me all the time.

We're far behind your build just some pegboard so far. We've got a cross country 2 week trip in it under our belts though. Really glad we went this route.

Awesome man. Being paid for means we can go wherever and jo td feel like its costing us to much or having a note where we feel like we have to go places just to justify the expense.

My vehicle won't tow anything but a little pop-up but I have rented camper motorhomes, the C class variety and they are perfect for my small family. They are expensive, but they are cheaper than owning when you only go once or twice a year and you don't have to store it, maintain it, deal with the pump outs and generator maintenance and on and on and on.
I guess if I was retired I might buy one just to get up and go whenever I wanted, but when you only go every once in a while and only a few days at a time, rent the shite out of them.
Pro-tip: The check-out and check-in process at the rental places are time constrained and somewhat of a pain, reserve and pick up a day early and schedule return a day later than your return. That gives you peace of mind and flexibility for having to pack all your family's crap into it, and then unpack it all when you get home, before having to return it. It's extra money, but is well spent.

What kind of vehicle?
My cargo conversion is 4200# with two four wheelers. Weighed at the CAT scales.
So close to 3500 without them if that helps.

Yep. Doubles as a handy arse utility trailer the rest of the year. We are figuring out how we want to rig up the AC in ours
As a bonus you can fill it slam up with shite and drag it 75 mph for 24 hours and not be getting 4 gallons to the mile while doing it. I fricking love our war wagon.

Remember you'll have to install extra bracing to support the weight.
Some angle iron bolted or welded.
If not it can sag and hold water or all the bouncing can break the tubing.
