Yeah we usually chum up and use cut pogie
when spearfishing, I'll go down deep 1st to look for some big AJ / red snapper / etc... then come back up and shoot the mangrove and stuff while in DECO.

We snorkel the rigs later in the season and if you just hover for a short time the mangrove come to you.
They get curious. just keep the spear angled down and when they get in range.. Let her go.

I wish someone would have videoed it. He bit my arm (covered with a wetsuit) so I slammed his head against the rig leg, assuming he was dead. WRONG! he was more pissed and bit my mask, I had to hold him on the rig leg and punch him till his skill was crushed
I learned though that if you take a knife and slice their mouth at the jaw, they cant bite

How do you guys mangrove fish?
Chum and use live croakers or cut pogie?
Both, but mostly Whole frozen Pogies w/ a 2 or 3 oz Jighead thru its mouth/gills and hooked in the back. Cast to the Rig and let it free line down until the bite. Its like souped up Bass fishing.......set the hook hard!!!!!!!!

we buy the 50lb boxes, which are usually big, 5-6" range and end up using them all and then some...........

Hell yes, make sure the jighead is all the way in the Pogies mouth, run the hook thru the Gill flap and hook it in the back........proven method. The Mangrove tends to chomp on the Pogie so you gotta just decide when to set the hook hard. Another tip is to use 40-50 lb line on a casting reel and crnk down the drag to get em away from the rig as fast as possible............GET EM!!!!!

Chum and use live croaker with yo zuri 50lb leader tied directly to the main line (no swivel) using a big spinning reel.
i prefer sardines rather than pogies
