I figured BPS & Cabelas would carry it locally, but they don't. Any ideas, or is my only option to shop online? I'd like to see the colors in person, since they look very different on a computer screen.

You can wrap a rod with any thread you want especially if you are planning on top coating it. Any place selling flytying supplies will have a huge selection of threads, floss, and cords that will work well. Kevlar based thread will be very strong and work well.

I'm wrapping my first rod, but I've read on other forums that its best to not use waxed thread, which most other threads are.

I don't see any on academy's website. I'll have to go check the store this week

Think I've seen it at Academy on the aisle endcaps or whatever they're called.

I'm sure BPS and Cabelas have it but it is hard to find. Look in the fly tying section. Academy has a very limited selection-only a few colors. You need nylon guide wrapping thread, not waxed. Waxed is used for tying flies. You'll also need some flex-coat epoxy, an electric rod turner and a hair dryer if you want to do a decent job. If you just want a quick fix, do the wrap and use fly tying head cement to cover the wrap.
