Just curious if there are any more weirdos here. I'm a first year apprentice. Flying a female red-tail at rabbits and squirrels. Having a lot of fun, but not a ton of luck yet.

Actually, I think that is pretty cool. You will come to find out how smart birds are, and that they do have a personality all their own.

I don't own raptors, but my parrots are a trip.

I'd like to go watch somebody else do it. I don't have much desire to own a falcon.

Kind of how I feel. I love watching birds pick off mice and squirrels, but I don't near about have enough time to do it myself.

Never had a falcon, but when I was in high-school in the old days, I got a game breeder's license and worked with a number of red-tails, a particularly vicious broadwing, and even got to work a bit with a goshawk. Was a member of the California Hawking Club and the North American Falconer's Assn. Don't even know if they are still around.

had to quit in college. No time or place for a decent mew.

It's definitely something you have to be serious about. You can't dabble in falconry.

I would love to fly a goshawk some day. The climate here is not great for them though.

I feed Eurasian Collards in my backyard just to see the occasional Cooper's/dove collision. It's a beautiful thing.

The goshawks are amazing. Cooper's Hawks are fun but "fragile" and too nervous. I've seen quite a few of them around. But you're right. Way too hot for goshawks. The one I got to work with belonged to a transplant who was got injured and needed someone to work his bird.

My dad is a falconer, he's been doing it since he was in Med school. I go with him quite a bit, he is flying a hybrid peregrine this year just catching ducks

They are amazing to see. My sponsor was working with a Cooper's this year, but just lost her last week.

I may try one of the accipiters eventually, but for now I'll be sticking to broadwings. I might get a Harris hawk once my apprenticeship is up.

I'd love to go along and see a true falcon hunt some day. The terrain here just isn't conducive to flying one.

There used to be a couple of guys in the Laffy area who had prairie falcons. Don't know if they are still around.

So how does this work? Do you just cut the bird loose and let it go kill something? Does it bring it back to you or do you go find it yourself? How do you keep the bird from eating whatever it is?

last weekend, a Redtail went after some cat squirrels not far from my tree. It crashed into the palmetto trying to get one. Had i not seen it about to happen, I would have needed to change my panties.

Harris hawks are my favorite. Smart as hell, too. My daughter recently did some volunteer work with the raptor rehab center and took care of "Hillary" the Harris Hawk. She was found locally and injured such that she can't be released. They think she belonged to a hawker.

I think we all have that problem

I'd like to do this one day. I love any kind of hunting that involves dogs. I'm sure watching a good falcon work is about like watching a good dog work. As good as it gets imo.
