Looking for places in south Louisiana. I’ve done Rip’s Rookery, Tickfaw State Park, and around the Blind River.

Any recs around Baton Rouge or points south?

If you ever want to take a day trip, drive over to Cameron Prairie

If your looking for different species start picking different ecosystems. St Francisville in the hills has totally different birds than those 3 you mentioned. Same for the shores of Lake Ponchatrain.

Join eBird and get the app. You’ll see where all the birding hotspots are around you and the world for that matter. It’s a game changer for a new birder.

You can't beat getting on or near the coast at places like Grand Isle, Peveto Woods (Cameron Parish), and White Lake Wetland Conservation Area at this time of year. Several neotropical migrants arriving on the coast right now, so you can see many different warblers, vireos, and tanagers in addition to the coastal species.

I left Louisiana before getting semi-serious about birding/photography, but a few spots I've found:

Lake Martin - Have been there several times. There is a rookery, and Pained Buntings can be found to the north where the road ends north of the rookery.

Rip Van Winkle Gardens entrance road - by Lake Peigneur - there are a couple of lakes that have a rookery, and Roseatte Spoonbills were raising their young in May around 7 or 8 years ago. Got some really nice shots.

Avery Island - has a rookery and is good in general.

Lacassine NWR - The best place I know of to take photos of Purple Gallinules. Lots of other opportunities too. Very nice wildlife drive.

A couple of times I just made a leisurely drive down to Peveto Woods while on the coast - along Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. It makes for a good road trip.

Found a couple of shots from those spots:

One more, from Avery Island:

Yeah, High Island is well worth the drive from Baton Rouge this time of the year. It can be pretty amazing on a good day.

lots of good suggestions already - when the Bonne Carre spillway is open (which seems to be happening more often lately) you can get huge groups of pelicans, various gulls, the resident bald eagles etc

Awesome shots! I’m fairly new to it. Got my camera Christmas a year ago. Just invested in a Tamron 159-600mm and can actually get good shots of small birds.

I never see Grosbeaks, Buntings, and the like here...mostly Eagles, Ospreys, Herons, Egrets, etc...and ducks...lots of freaking ducks.

Thanks for the tips!
