I think the gauge of the new plug wasn’t sufficient to ground the old bulbs but when you switched to LEDs the draw was way lower and they lit up. You were getting power but resistance was so high it was causing voltage drop.

Makes sense bc I got one running light wire feeding three, and one ground wire feeding three.

What do you mean?
A "short" is a chafed wire or some other means contacting the ground or grounding "out". A ground wire is a direct path, impossible to have a short in a ground wire but it is possible for a ground circuit to be "open" or have lost it's path.

Well I stand corrected, then. I think the problem was a bad ground connection to either the plug or the tail lights. Sound better? Regardless, my shite is now working flawlessly, at least until I dunk it in the water and discover how not waterproof my connections are

I have never been so happy to find someone with the same problem as me. Just to verify, are you saying;
Tie all three Brown Wires together, then connect to the single Brown Wire on the new 4 Flat Connector
Tie all three White Wires together, then connect to the single White Wire on the new 4 Flat Connector
Connect Green to Green
Connect Yellow to Yellow
Please let me know when you can, I made the same discovery on my Karavan Trailer

I believe that is correct. Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct solution. Start there, and if it doesn't work, then explore other options.
