your 38 Super ammo is hard to find,

I have had no difficulty finding it. Even the price is reasonable. I have had issues finding 38 special and when I do it is high cotton prices. I did some research and the Army adopted the 38 super for one reason mainly for women. They were having trouble with the recoil of the 45acp.
Anyways thanks for the input. I purchased the Colt GI 38 super 1966 and ended up getting another Colt 1911 45acp made in 1913 in pristine condition. I own way too many 1911 style guns....in fact I own way too many guns.

But the limiting factor today is finding .38 super at the store

Simple solution is to get a 9mm Luger barrel fitted for it, so you can practice with cheaper ammo and easily swap back to 38 super whenever.

Great round, cost is holding it back. Reloading it is very economical.

I have a Star Super in 9x23 Largo, dimensions of the cases are very similar. There's some debates on the online forums whether 38 Super is safe to shoot in those; generally the consensus is not to do so in Astras and older stuff, but the Stars (particularly the Supers) are stout enough to handle it. A couple respected guys have said that's all they put through theirs, since Largo can be tough to come by.

Looking at the ballistics, the factory 38 Super is now downloaded to basically Largo specs.

It's a fun round to shoot out of a 5" barrel. I haven't had the need to try to use 38 Super, as I have a good stash of Largo. FWIW, I understand you can also shoot the Largo out of the 38 Super guns, and that's 'more safe' since it's not quite as hot a spec.
