I bring up the AR because in this tactacool age, when anyone says "customize" or "make it their own" that's 99% of the time what they are referring to.

ETA: chap scope? Hard to beat the Mueller APV for about $120.

Apparently the marlin has been around longer

They both have been around many years so that there are no surprises w/ either one. If the Ruger was a brand new model and the Marlin an established product, I could see your concern. As it is, I don't see the fact that the Marlin has been on the market longer as a factor.

is more accurate out the box

I'd be interested to review this info and check the source. Like lots of y'all, I've read a lot on the net and don't recall seeing any reliable info showing that the Marlin 60 is, w/ regularity, more accurate out of the box than the Ruger 10/22. I'm sure there are isolated cases of this.

and cheaper than the ruger.

Yeah, but not by much. Using Bud's Gun Shop as a reference, the lowest priced Marlin 60 (w/ black syn stock) is $165. The lowest priced syn stock 10/22 is $210. In addition, one can frequently find the 10/22 on sale around $180-200. But don't forget to add $10-15 to the cost of the Marlin since it doesn't come w/ a scope base adaptor and the Ruger does. If you think the 10/22 is a better gun, you can find some extra money to buy it.

Although I don't have a Marlin, I've got 3 10/22's, plus a Charger (basically a 10/22 action w/ a 10" pistol barrel). I've been pleased w/ the accuracy of all. I might would be pleased w/ the accuracy of a Marlin as well, if I had one. I don't anticipate buying a Marlin because: I don't like the tube fed mag; I like the aftermarket products available for the 10/22 that improve it. None of my 10/22's have been made into "tactical" weapons, but all have had some degree of DIY gunsmithing done that have made them better guns. You don't have those options w/ the Marlin.

Headslash is spot on. The rifmirecentral website he referenced has a plethora of info about 22 rifles. It is very useful.

I also agree w/ his rec for Mueller scopes. I have a 4-16X ATV Mueller on my Savage 17 Mach 2 and have really been impressed w/ it. The only thing I'm not crazy about on this particular model is the EXTERNAL adjustment controls.

Not that anybody cares but i knew I wouldn't do much customizing to a simple .22 LR so I ended up going against what I said and just got the marling and threw a buschnell 4x32 on elevated rings so I could still use iron sights. Sighted it in at 25 yards saturday. Great cheap setup EXCEPT for the fact that I had about 5 failure to extracts properly. Shells kept getting caught. Out the door with the scope, gun and rings at $230.
