Setting up camp on the 28th in the unit...2R starts in 15 days!

From what I'm hearing from friends around the state, rut is late this year. Hopefully this cooler weather we've had pushes em down a little bit. I'm looking forward to some snow where I'll be

I'll be there in spirit only

Where ya headed? I'm in 46, north of Bailey. Got lucky and drew with 0 pts

I may even bring my hammock now as well. I have a tipi and stove setup but may not need it

Son, his buddy, and I hunted first rifle in a unit they got as their second choice, resident and I got in the second draw. No points lost.
Big snow right before the season. When we turn off to go up the mountain, the only tracks are a 4 wheeler. We chained up my Tacoma and up we went. The snow stopped us 200 yards from where we wanted to camp, but close enough. About a foot of snow at 10,000’. On the second afternoon, sons friend had to go in due to work. We’d been into elk the first day, but nothing on day two. We left our glassing spot before it got dark, as it was too late to make a move on a bull if we saw one. I told son to check the meadow just below camp, as I was trailing behind. When I get there, he’s got one spotted and is trying to make sure he’s legal. Soon enough, he cranks off three rounds of 120 Nosler Partition from his 257 WBY and we have a 4x4 bull down 200 yards from camp. This was his first elk.
Things that worked;
Leg gaiters keep our lower legs dry from the snow
Trekking poles helped in the snow and dead fall timber
Kodiak Canvas tent and Buddy Heater did great.
First time using chains, and they’re a great insurance policy for Western hunting when things get Western
Good luck to those in the later seasons.

Just called gaiters.

Don't forget the snow baskets which typically do not come with poles.

Good deal, because you'll probably end up with more snow than me even though you're only about 20mi to the west of the unit I'll be in. Typically bad weather doesn't make it past Guanella Pass this time of year, but I'm sure since I said something, it'll be a year of firsts!
