Gonna update this thread as we go. I chronicled my Montana mule deer trip last year. Plan to do the same this year. I’m on my way to meet up with my 2 buddies and we’re headed up to Colorado. Should be there about 9-10am tomorrow. The 3rd rifle season opens tomorrow. Its gotten cold and some snow has fallen. Hope the elk have moved down the mountains. We’ve never hunted elk but have had success in mt with mule deer. I’ll update more later regarding gear and plans.
We plan to stop in Denver at a place called outdoorgeek. We’re renting a 14x17 wall tent, stove, cots for the whole week. The plan is to hunt around the main camp site. If we don’t see much, we will hike in and set up spike camps until we find them. I’m bringing a 300 win mag. Been practicing up to 500 yards and am confident at that range. I’ll be shooting 180gr nosler accubond handloads. The goal of this trip is to learn and bring meat home. We bought 2 cow tags and 1 bull tag.

How hard was it to get tags?

I've applied for 3 years now, no luck. It all depends on the area you are applying to and the weapon/season you are using.

So that’s a whole story in itself. We used huntin fools for mt. For $50 they take care of everything. My buddies got mt tags easily 3 years in a row. We thought we’d do the same this year. So they filled out our apps for mule deer. But they didn’t tell us nor check the box that says if you don’t get your first choice, you can get Access to a leftover list. I’m not sure the exact terminology Colorado uses. Needless to say we lost out on mule deer tags. We chose to do otc bull tags and leftover cow tags.

Went on my first elk trip last year for 3rd rifle season in Colorado and got my first bull. Unbelievable experience and definitely won’t be my last. Goodluck man hope you get one.
I’d post the pic but don’t know how to post pics on here.

How do you get leftover CO cow tags as a non resident?? Though only residents could get cow tags for the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons

Unit 851. Way in south Colorado southwest of Trinidad. We hunted only a few miles from the New Mexico border.

Me too. And without a GPS, it can be difficult to know what is private or public.
