The article does not say what type of gun it was but it may have been a revolver.
Keeping guns un-chambered is a great way to prevent young ones from errantly firing a shot. Sadly it also prevents the wife from racking a round with some of the larger caliber hand guns. For that matter a person under stress (awaken in the middle of the night) may forget to rack the gun and instead just try to pull the trigger.

Ive argued (here) against keeping one in the chamber ad nauseaum.
And I've disagreed with you ad nauseaum.
Different strokes for different folks.

As far as education my boys have seen very early on what happens when a trigger is pulled. They have seen the entrance and exit wounds. They have seen a living active animal die with a single shot and have helped clean and dress that animal. We have memorized the rules of gun safety. We practice muzzle control at all times including BB guns. I have a zero tolerance policy for muzzle control. I will occasionally bring my cc weapon in and leave it on the counter un loaded and unchambered to observe the reaction. The boys now 5 and 6 will immediately report they saw a gun out and they will not cross infront of the muzzle or touch the gun without asking.

Agreed.
But that's why our cowgirls must be skilled and trained in the weapons they are able to use.
About 25 years ago, my mother planted an uncollared dog that was jumping at my sisters on their bikes.
.32 magnum revolver, if my memory remains perfect.
I was 10. That frickin dog corpse was a heavy load to drag away.
