3 years ago my son, who was 13 at the time decided he wanted to take up archery. For Christmas I bought him the Diamond infinite edge bow. We made a deal. He would not be able to hunt with a bow until he could hit a quarter at 30 yds.
His 1st year he really didn’t shoot it too much. About halfway through the 2nd year he started shooting some more.
This spring he really got into it and bought himself a new bow. It a Hoyt but I don’t know which one. He practiced. A lot.
A couple of months ago he brought me his quarter that had 2 nice rings from a field point in it.

This summer he bought himself a saddle to hunt out of.

I don’t have a pic but last weekend he hunted at his grandparents. He had 5 or 6 deer come through but not where he was expecting them so he didn’t get a shot. 30 minutes or so later, he texted me to tell me he shot one. I told him to give it about an hour. He got down and went to take all his stuff back to his truck and wait.
After an hour he we looking. He immediately found a large pool of blood. He found drops everywhere but they slowed to very few and then stopped.

I told him to mark his last blood and fan out from there. He was 40yds from where he shot it. Took him about an hour but he finally found it.

It was just a doe, but a nice fat mature doe.
And it was his 1st with his bow.
I am a very proud dad.

Not knocking all the folks that take their 5 year old out and do everything for them to kill a deer. But this is how you raise a young man. Let him learn on his own with guidance.

Quarter is pretty tight! I was somewhere in between a quarter and paper plate. My daughter had to consistently hit a 3x5 index card with bow or rifle before I let her hunt. Every season she had to show me she could do it. Got to where she wanted to show off and show me how easily she could do it.

She started challenging me to accuracy contests and we would make it a game based on points. Had a quarter sized dot at the center of the vitals, 3x5 area drawn around that and then the general vitals. These were worth 3, 2 and 1 points respectively. Made it fun instead of just shooting a target.

However you do it, teach your kids to love and respect the outdoors.
