It absolutely is a must. One thing that isnt touched on directly in this article is the expenditures in the DW. Thats the most crucial piece. DW exploration and production is a costly business and it needs the strong support of the Gulf Coast workforce and service companies to be sustainable. If DW E&P is eliminated, the impact to the Gulf Coast would be crippling.

well if they would open up other areas to drill closer in maybe we would HAVE to be in 5,000 ft of water. Too many "not in my backyarders" out there. We take almost all the risk. It is a must as it is set up currently, no doubt.

I agree. The government can blame themselves for some of this since if there were no areas off limits then we probably wouldn't be that far offshore.

Wrongo there, Buckaroo. The oil companies would drill in BOTH shallow and deep water - wherever the oil is. We would still have the problems we have now.

They only drill where it is economically feasible to i.e. proven reserves

Supposedly the filed they were tapping into with the DH was going to be VERY productive.

There would still be drilling in the DW even if additional offshore areas were opened. Maybe not to the degree we see now but there are huge sources of untapped reserves in the DW.
