Please forgive my ignorance but in layman's terms
why is it taking so long to get set up to do this? Was this procedure started only two weeks
ago?

I think the ROVs had to replumb sections of the BOP to gain access to the well. They also had to bring in a different rig to stage it thru.

I played golf on Sunday and found scuba divers in the ponds collecting golf balls. We asked them what's up and they said they are being contracted to collect golf balls for BP's top kill. Apparently only old Slazenger golf balls will work...so they have to wait to collect enough.

Just kidding i have no idea why it's taking so long. Perhaps this has some risk of actually making the leak even worse so they are being careful.

I am getting positive feedback from my sources. They all seem to believe that it is going to work.

I know absolutely zero about the oil business, but I've got a feeling they'll get it done this time. BP officials say the the pressure is down (even though they wouldn't say what it is) and decreasing, and some of them and other experts seem a little more upbeat than they have been over their other attempts. I'll be listening to this like they must have been watching the moon landing in '69.

Anyone have any idea when they are going to start the actual implementation? I've heard later this week but nothing specific.

I also wonder if they are going to junk shot the siphon tube at the same time. Maybe they will pull the siphon when they try....

I read somewhere that the Junk Shot was being called off for now. BP was concerned that there was a possibilty of making matters worse.

My understanding is that, if successful, the Top Kill should control the well and stop all current flow. It's a temporary fix, until the relief well is completed.

I wonder how it could makes things worse. Maybe back pressure blowing the riser off?

Something about the potential of eroding or damaging the casing below the mudline.

That is the first that I have heard of them calling it off. I believe that the plan has changed from the first concept but a plan to go forward with a Top Kill is still in the works as far as I know.

Fred: Your info has been more accurate than the T-P's, but this article was posted yesterday a.m. with a graphic detailing the "Top Kill"

Per nola.com (N.O. T-P):
quote:

Later this week, BP will perform a "top kill" on the oil well. The process requires injecting 40 barrels a minute of "kill mud" into the broken well and then sealing it with cement. The material will be pumped at high pressure down the choke and kill lines of the blowout preventer, which failed to seal the well after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20. Choke and kill lines are used to control the amount and pressure of drilling mud in the wellbore, so that surges of oil and natural gas can be kept under control.

BP had initially planned to precede the top kill with a "junk shot," pumping debris such as golf balls and shredded tires into the blowout preventer to clog the leak, before adding the mud. But BP decided not to do the junk shot under concerns that it might cause more damage. BP spokesman Mark Proegler said the junk shot carried certain risks, specifically that the debris could shoot through the well causing more oil to leak.

Just because I read it in the T-P, doesn't mean it's true!

That makes sense. The Top Kill is going to be done but not the Junk Shot. They are going to pump mud and not the rope and golf balls.

I told the guys yesterday that I would tie knots in the rope for them at $500.00 per knot. I was told that I would have been the low bidder, but they didn't need me to help with that part of it.

I guess the big question is :Can they get the rate of flow for the top kill to work. Any one know the orifice size of their access to the well?

BP seems to be pretty upbeat about the possibility of this working.

I can tell you that there has been a whole lot of MacGyver shite going on trying to get thinks to work.

I know that they have been mobing up a vessel with equipment, mud, and cement for the last week. Very large quantities of all three. Takes time.
