Not sand berm related, but here's an update:

From: Chris Roberts Subject: Grand Isle - Lafitte Update 5 24 10 Sent: May 24, 2010 8:28 PM From JP Emergency Management: This is summary of the activities that occurred in Grand Isle today. Each Day we are pressuring BP to increase the number of assets that are in Grand Isle to stop the oil from entering Barataria Bay. We are specifically pushing for more skimmers. As of this time we still do not have an effective booming plan for the two largest passes, Coup Abel and Four Bayous. Those plans are supposed to be delivered to us tomorrow. BP had fifty shrimp boats towing boom in Barataria Bay today trying to clean up oil that flowed into the bay over the weekend. While progress is being made it is slow and oil still exists in the Bay. On a positive note the shrimp boats are being placed across the entrance to Barataria Bay at Four Bayous and Coup passes with their booms deployed at night to minimize the amount of oil that can come in at night during high tide periods. You would have to cut passes in the berms in the same spot as the natural passes in the barrier islands to maintain tidal flows that the ecosystem has adapted to. But if you do that then the oil gets in anyway

And this would quickly erode a good portion of the sand that they will pump unless they are also planning to put rock jetties on the passes. Sounds like a waste of money to me. They should be spending on new fresh water diversion projects then lastly building up the barrier islands.

there is no way to plug the major passes, however, those who have flown over the area or been on the water know there are hundreds of whashout cuts in islands and smaller cuts that can be filled. the realistic plan is to fill some gaps in the armor and focus the boom defenses on the remaining holes.

i am all for it, i just don't know where we are going to get all the dredges. great lakes dredging, weeks marine, pine bluff sand and gravel, and the corps are the only ones i know of around here that have the firepower for a project like this, and it would take their combined efforts.

i am with you guys, inaction is not an option. this thing could flow until august, so we would still be preventing potentially a month or two of oil heading our way.

Cosmo:

No, you are a disgrace because you keep taking up for BP. Saying the damage is done is ridiculous. DO you see how much oil is out there? Are we supposed to just let it come on in without trying to do something like build some barrier islands. Who knows how long this will keep coming ashore. Saying LA is building these barriers on BPs $$ is all I need to hear to know that you care about the livlihood of BP, not LA.
