I should have some more pics coming soon taken from a crew boat in the area.
Just e-mail 'em over...I'll post them when I can.

I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't new regs soon mandating fire fighting capabilities on all offshore supply vessels. Edison Chouest has quite the presence out there. Can't miss those bright orange boats.

So that is like 300-500 ft deep?

I was wondering the same thing...don't think it is, just think the wind caught some smoke at a weird angle and spun it off.

add another zero to those numbers
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 4000 ft of water.

I dont know man I doubt it. Fire fighting for incidents like this is pretty pointless.

Damn... Ive been spearfishing out at the rigs and i thought we were about 20-30 miles out and that was 200-300ft.
I dont dive more than 120 FWIW, but its incredible down there.

I was in block 311 of Mississippi Canyon, this was in block 252 which is VERY close, and we were in 375 feet of water.

Oh it is but the ones that right the rules and regs are bureaucrats up in Washington. Escort tugs have to be fire fighting classed in order to go after LNG contracts. I don't know about you but i don't want to be anywhere near a liquified natural gas carrier that is on fire. It would make this rig look like a bonfire in your back yard.

So is there any chance of finding out the root cause of the failure?

I think so. I was told that if we went out another 10-20 miles it would drop off to several thousand feet. Incredible.

The slope of the sea floor in that area is one of the steepest in the Gulf. Water depths drop off pretty radiply in the MC area. The platform Im gonna be on is about 150 miles out and its in 8000 ft water depth.

Hopefully so. Right now this one is a mystery based on the limited amount of info out there.
