So reading the paper is God's word?

Read the NY Times and it says Obama is doing great!

Papers and other media are more biased and partial than anything on Earth!

But stopping people from palying bingo or gambling is the dumbest fricking thing I have ever heard people waste their time on....leave it to Bama.

I just left today, no smell at all. There was a little oil washed up with the seaweed, but people where still in the water. I also saw nothing in the bay two days ago!

I've been on the beach the past two days at Perdido Key. Haven't seen any oil. Definitely no oil smell in the air.

Intersting.

Honestly, I think this mess will come in "waves", if you will. Like the outer bands of a hurricane. At least for parts of the gulf not named Louisiana. LA is just to close to the spill, very heartbreaking because it is the hardest terrain to clean. The panhandle will definitely experience the effects of this spill, but I think it will come in washes like we see in Perdido. Not much oil this day or that day, then bham a rush of it. I think it will take a while if ever (due to currents and wind) for the heavy and constant stuff to reach the AL and FL beaches.

Disclaimer: I am not a scientist studying the currents, winds, oil, etc. I do reside in the FL panhandle, and these are just my opinions/ thoughts based on what I have heard and seen.

Some people say the smell is terrible and some say no smell at all. Does it smell or not?

An update.....Stayed at the Phoenix 9 about 500 yards from the Flora Bama....early week was fine....water was great no problems at all. On Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 the oil came in... in about penny-sized pieces...made a pretty good mess. Wednesday was a total loss....beach and water was pretty bad. Cleanup crews were up and down the beach every day with nothing to do UNTIL the oil arrived. After it's arrival, we didn't see them again.....not once.

Awoke Thursday morning to a clean beach and water.....apparently the tide came in and washed the oil back into the water (there was lots of seaweed however). Thursday was a pretty good day. We did leave a day early to come home and Brett Robinson gladly refunded our unused night.

I think it depends where one works and how much chemical is in the air. I work in the oil field. I was working in an oil lab. The alarm went off. The police showed up. The police said to me, "Man, I'm glad it was nothing. The second I walked in here I smelled nothing but xylene. Man, how do ya'll work in here?" To that I replied. I've worked around this stuff my whole life. I can't smell any xylene.

So, only the more sensitive nose might be picking up the chemical/oil smell.

At Phoenix 7 now, day 2 of vacation. My main fear was arriving here, opening the balcony door and having it smell like a flight line. If you try hard enough, you can catch a very occasional whiff of "something"(that doesn't belong). If you look hard enough on the beach, you can find an occasional tarball or 2. It does not smell like Westlake(no offense intended), no jello pudding in the water, and no animals beaching themselves. The elevators here actually seem fast, probably because this is appropriate capacity for 4 fricking elevators. My advice to anyone on the fence is to ask for the 30% discount, come out and have a great time, and keep your kids out of the ocean. I will post an update, if anything changes...crap vandy just lost.

Not at all, but it a lots more comprehensive than the total idiots that are local TV news reporters. And more to my point, Riley has been down here 3 or 4 days a week since it happened. To say he hasnt done shite because he's been in Fungumery too worried about illegal gambling is pretty damn uninformed.

So other states don't enforce gambling laws. Ok den.

Eh. It comes and it goes. Certian days, certain times of days its pretty thick, but the smell doesn;t seem to stay around for long.

I'm close enough to the Bay to see the battleship and have only noticed the smell of oil on two days since this whole mess started.

As Priapism4LSU stated....maybe an occassional whiff.....i didn't notice anything the entire week and we had actual oil Wednesday. Concentrations might be higher near DI and there was supposed to be a southwest wind blowing i believe (which might contribute to Mobile getting the smell).

I was very uneasy about driving 5 hours and not knowing what i was going to encounter. We're glad we made the trip and had a good time.

If you're planning to go, please do so if possible. The locals were very appreciative of our risk taking. They're pretty pissed about the national media and the handling of all of this. As mentioned above a sizable discount should be in order.

I live on Mobile Bay almost due North of The Beach Club. I have smelled oil from time to time for almost 3 weeks now, depending on the day and wind. Normally I could bet on smelling it if there was a good stiff south/southwest breeze but, as of late it has seemed to lifted a little. The smell at times has been extremely strong, but it is also something that I am not accustom to so I pick up on it fairly easy. I told my wife we better get used to it because when it coats our bulkhead the winds aren't going to help us anymore.
