I can't see how oil with a specific gravity half that of sea water can be trapped in a layer under water, the laws of physics have not changed. I can understand that due to ocean currents, the oil may not reach the surface util it has traveled 20 miles or so from the actual well.

i sit and watch overflights pics everyday and have yet to see anything out there that would make me believe there are secret plumes out there

the plumes exist....they have been videod. The only real debate is how big they are. Also whether or not they will stay stratified in the water column. JMO

the only existence they have are increased hydrocarbons in the water.

There have been several research expeditions regarding the plumes. The first one on the Pelican turned out not to be so. Water was a different color and looked like an oil fog but no hydrocarbons. Subsequent ones led by UGA are presently being analyzed as are samples from UT.

CE, you don't think dispersants can lead to the "cloud" hanging out below the surface?

and if they existed dont you think we would have real concrete evidence by now?

Do you mind waiting for the fricking test results before proclaiming one way or the other.

From the University of Miami:

Oil Plumes

quote:

MIAMI — June 4, 2010 —

Thousands of barrels of oil are leaking out of the Deepwater Horizon site each day. The oil ascends from depths of approximately 1502 m. (4928 ft.), but not all of it reaches the sea surface.

The stratified seawater of the Gulf of Mexico captures or slows the ascent of the oil, and the addition of dispersants near the oil source produces tiny droplets that float for a considerable time in the water column and may never reach the surface.

quote:

“It is most likely that the delicate cold-water corals are not able to digest these oil-laden food particles and will perish in large numbers,” said Eberli. “We are especially concerned because the migrating oil plumes have the potential to destroy or greatly diminish these deep-sea coral communities as they are carried by the currents. These corals are important because they are the foundation of a diverse ecosystem that at last count includes over 1,300 marine species, according to Dr. Thomas Hourigan at NOAA.”

Living in denial is much more comfortable for some people than accepting unpleasant realities.

^ Opinion ^

Rather than calling me names or attacking the credibility of the source, how about someone find something, from a source other than BP that refutes the above.

CE, do you think it's possible that the oil droplets are so small that a reverse effect of Stoke's settlement is occurring? Maybe the dispersants are causing them to be smaller than 100 microns and they are just sitting there now.

Exist?

Based on the oil coming up on our fishing lines 15-20 miles SSE of Pensacola last Wednesday in areas where there was no visible oil on the surface, I would say yes.

Yes. Research on the population of red snapper on public reefs off Florida, cause the sumbitches closed my spots in the waters off Alabama the day before.

My research shows there was at least a 6 person limit of 5-15lb red snapper on Florida public reefs on June 2, 2010, that had not yet been tainted by the oil.

The subsurface erl was an unexpected finding.

If anybody (other than BP) still doubts the existence of oil plumes, here is a demonstration video by two fluid dynamics PHD's showing how plumes form...

EDIT: Oops, just noticed Mudminnow was on top of this very quickly and previously posted the CNN video of this study. Sorry.
