That upper flange sure is nice and shiny. I wonder if they're going to show that to Obama when they get it topside.

MountainTiger!
Hi guy. Hope you don't mind it too much if one of us nasty "bammer" fans checks in with you.
Sorry to hear about your bad back, but perhaps you can put your pain to "good use" by helping the rest of us to understand whatz going down in the Gulf these days.
It's gonna be *very* interesting to see if the new doo-hickey will, indeed, manage to caputure almost all of the runaway oil gusher. If so, then it will likely help set the stage for the final procedure that will bring this horrendous mess to closure.
And ain't it a DANG SHAME that all of these new & creative solutions weren't developed and TESTED many years ago? Considering what this entire effort has cost so very many folks, some really good "proactive" research & testing would have required only a tiny fraction of whatz being spent these days had ALL of the major players involved in oil exploration & drilling just been willing to consider what would happend if a "Doomsday Scenario" ever happened to hit the fan.
Anywho, hope you'll keep up with your running commentary so that the rest of us amateurs might better understand the ongoing efforts to put this DISASTER to bed.
All the Best,

The thread was started by a Gump so maybe I'm the interloper. :)

Your best way to stay informed is to check out the latest Kent Wells updates. I posted a link in this forum. Watch those videos and you'll know pretty much everything I do.

Sure but if you're a stock holder in an oil company, would you want to pay with your profits for that research that you may never use? If you're a taxpayer, would you want to pay for it? No fair using 20/20 hindsight. Also keep in mind that even if they knew exactly what to do from jump street, it may not have shortened the time to resolve this disaster. It's easy to look back and say that we should have had a better plan -- and there's some truth to that. But somebody has to pay for it. In this case, the Gulf Coast will pay for it so I hope it's knowledge well used.

Even typing hurts so I'll post when I have something to say but I'll remain quiet otherwise.
Take care and thanks for your interest.

I am just praying they are able to remove the upper flange without too much difficuties; the bent flex joint which they straightened with hydrolics may still grip onto the seal. That may be why they have the flange splitting tool ready on hand. The other potential challenge is how well they can lower in place and seal the flange transition spool if there are minor bore deformities as a result of the previous bending of the flex joint. That's anxiety provoking!

Looks like that's the bottom of the ram stack. The next thing to go on will be the transition spool, which is on Boa Deep C ROV 1.
Edit: Beat me to it Jeff. The spool is being lowered and according to the depth indication on the display is just passing through 1500'. Kent said that they would have both pieces in the water at the same time to save a little time. The spool is being lowered on wireline and the stack is on drill pipe.

The depth display was wrong. I see the BOP in the background now so it's almost ready to go.

yea that 1500 was driving me nuts.
Enterprise – ROV 1 that is a "top hat" I think they have it as a jest in case back up

It's 1500 meters.
I know they said there was going to be a new top hat on standby just in case. But it looked a lot like the bottom of the new stack...which I guess makes sense for a top hat too since it has to seal the same fitting.
Do you see what's going on here? Really clever how they are going to line this spool up with the flange.

The phrase "put some hair around it" comes to mind.
Damn they got 3 ROVs working right around the top of the LMRP. It's amazing that they don't poke each other in the eye.

On a mobile phone, short explanation please. Been watching at home last night and early am. Finally some action and I'm not home.

In a nutshell oyster, they have the transition spool over the LMRP and they are lining it up before they try to stab that bitch in there. I wish you could see it, it's damn cool.

they are very close to setting the adaptor spool on the BOP stack
Posted on 7/11/10 at 1:50 pm to jeff967
Does it look like the drill pipe is gonna be a problem?

no they thought that out very good
