A quart of motor oil can contaminate up to 250,000 gallons of drinking water! - DPW Bureau of Sanitation

Two points:

Motor oil is not crude oil. Decent fractions of what comes out of the hole will evaporate away. So you can't equate that data tidbit directly to the amount of crude being vented.

What is the official threshold of contamination? Not ragging on EPA standards, but in some cases, unacceptable levels contamination has negligible practical effect.

I did find it humorous folks attacked the OP for using the phrase "Let's put it in perspective."

Folks, this is serious....but by itself it isn't the end of the world situation that folks are making it. I suspect the political response will have a bigger long term effect than the spill itself.

Thank God they fixed that hole Katrina put in the roof of the dome... I mean - Your plan seems solid. But the last thing we'd need is a whole 'nuther leak to deal with.

The idiots in this thread is why I don't even try posting on this board any more.

The OP had a surprising perspective. I thought it was going to be 2 or 3.

Thanks jortsboy. I was wondering about the difference in it being crude, and also wondered what contaminated was determined as, but dont feel like looking it up.

eta: i hadnt looked that original quote up, but someone had posted it as a reply to a thread on a different board

Anytime

Wasn't really directing the response to you are much as I was to the quote, which I have seen a lot of people cite.
