Have any idea how long this well would produce oil and gas given the flow rate if NOTHING were done to stop it.
How big is this "pocket" of oil?

it's an impossible question to answer w/o more data. without data like the reservoir size, original oil in place, original bottom hole pressure, flowing bottom hole pressure, accurate flowrates, and reservoir drive mechanism (i.e. is there a big acquifer behind this pushing the oil out or is it just a trapped volume losing pressure like a balloon) - any kind of answer would just be a wild arse guess.

Isn't the reservoir size the reason to drill there in the first place?
I know there are many undertermined variables, but surely these oil companies aren't spending millions of dollars drilling into formations that would only yield let's say 30 days of production.
I'm not flaming---just asking.
Would it be possible for this well to produce at this rate for years?

Yes. What OilfieldTiger is saying is that BP knows this information, but we don't. So, there's no way to answer the original question of how long this reserve would flow.

Gotcha! I just didn't know if someone besides BP knew or might have heard how big this reservoir is.
Would be interesting to know how big this pocket of oil is!

The reservoir may have held about 50 million barrels of crude, he said.
From Bloomberg.com: LINK
And Wikipedia: Macondo Prospect
quote:
Location The prospect is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 of the Gulf of Mexico. BP is the operator and principal developer of the oil field with 65% of interest, while 25% is owned by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, and 10% by MOEX Offshore 2007, a unit of Mitsui.[1]
The prospect may have held 50 million barrels (7.9×10^6 m3) producible reserves of oil.[2]

Put it this way, they didn't drill for a few weeks of oil. Your probably talking over 3 years
Posted on 5/24/10 at 11:53 am to the LSUSaint
more like a couple of decades

Thanks!
Man if one reservoir holds that much oil it just makes you wonder how much oil is really under the Gulf of Mexico!
