My biggest hang up on this story is we have over 30k PA'd wells in the GoM. How many of them have leaked?
Secondly, I was watching Countdown with Olberman last night because I heard MMS while flipping through the stations. He was beating on the idea that operators abandon wells on the honor system.
I guess all of the applications, weekly activity reports, IADC daily reports, etc that are reviewed by our engineers and inspectors is the so called honor system.
We need people to stand up. Personally, I am disappointed with our (BOE's) public affairs approach on this issue, and I am equally upset with API, OOC, IADC, et al.
And we have regs in place for operators to report any sheen / pollution incident greater than 1 bbl. If any leaking PA well is in the vicinity of a pollution incident of a "unknown source," I am damn certain (and we have) made operators jump divers and/or ROVs to identify the source and address it.

all of this is done just to gin up stories. it's like one of the previous posters said: take the # of wells, use the word "time bomb", and voila', you have invented a story out of thin air just by stating the # of wells and not doing any research.
how about quoting the # of wells & platforms that have been toppled during recent hurricanes and the associated spill volume? oh, there's no alarmist story there, only a story that implies the gov't and industry did their job properly. nevermind then.

the cement on the BP/Halliburton spill well was
APPARENTLY not yet set/cured.
If you are talking about abandoned wells, you are talking a long time for the cement to cure.
Apples, oranges.

I was told not to talk to the media under any circumstance....they(public affairs) even follow me to my car.

Please go back to your cave on the poli board troll.
I am looking at a cementing manual right now, most plugs are "100-500 ft in length with the minimum recommended in the cementer's manual being 500." If it is less that's the operators call.
Even 100 ft of cement is pretty substanial to try and penetrate
