Technically correct standards state that I'm a Native American because I was born in America. So I check Native American on all forms.

You are missing the point. When we use the term African American, they are using it to describe a black person. Not here to debate the literal translation.
If you call someone a dickhead are you literally saying you think they are a part of a penis or does it mean something else?

It's a poor descriptor. Plus it is cumbersome as hell. Black and white are also not great. Brown and pink would be more accurate. Dark-skinned and light-skinned seem to be the preferred expressions among my elementary aged kids.
