Eh, If I had to know, it would probably be how.
No way I would want to when... you would constantly be watching in anxiety.
If you knew how you could try to prolong it if you wanted to.
I feel like you have it backwards. Knowing how but not when would cause me severe anxiety, kinda like in Hot Tub Time Machine where you keep thinking this is the moment when the guy loses his arm.
If you know when, then you don't ever have to worry about anything and you can live life to the fullest.

probably already been asked but if I choose how, am I able to make changes now to prevent it. Like if its lung cancer could I quit smoking to avoid it?

How. If you know when, there's nothing you can do to avoid it. If you know how, you could potentially avoid whatever activity/place is supposed to end up killing you.

Probably neither, but if I had to find out either I would want to find out on April 1 so I could live the rest of my life convincing myself it was a cruel joke.

Definitely when. Then you could do all the crazy shite you want knowing that you won't die.

Learning how you die could give clues to when

Definitely when. Think about all the amazing things you could do with no fear of dying. Of course, doesn't mean you couldn't end up a mangled mess who is on life support until that final date but odds are, you could really live life to the fullest. If the date is earlier than I hoped it would also give me the chance to work on my bucket list way earlier and not put off things I think I can do after retirement.

That way I can make an attempt to rob some banks a couple of months before. See if I can get away with it
Than you how was getting shanked in prison. So good job setting yourself up for that.
