I've been teaching myself to play guitar for almost 50 years (it will be 50 years this Christmas) I've gotten to be a decent picker.
I think though, I could have been much better if I had a teacher when I was younger.
I keep hammering away at it though and am still improving.

I find a mixture of both is best.
You can only learn so much about somethings by reading or watching.
After you do something for a bit, as a beginner, hitting the books or taking a lesson again will accelerate your progress.

I’m 56 and decided to take up beekeeping about 8 years ago. I read one pamphlet on beekeeping and winged it with one purchased package of bees. I now run 150 hives part time. Everything I learned was from trial and error. No YouTube videos, no mentor, no classes. Just failure after failure and then some success.
I have an old friend(haven't seen him in 20 years), he had a pretty serious honey operation in North Alabama. It was pretty interesting to listen to him talk about it. It put a smile on his face.
Back when, he said he had 2 main harvests, when the Tupelo trees bloomed, and then again when cotton was blooming.
You could look at the difference in the harvest. I prefer the Tupelo ( he said that some call it wildflower honey) honey.
To me, it's always important to listen to people who are passionate about what they do. If you listen to them talk and point out their most important things and try to remember it. You might be able to apply some of that stuff to your own things in some situation.
