There are definitely sub-par engineers that compensate by pointing at their PE certificate. I never found a PE of any use in my ChE career. And that includes some consulting and relief valve calculations. Ultimately you live and die by your reputation, not a PE certificate. But I think that's changing as the world continues to become more bureaucratic.

Most insurers require pressure relief evaluations to be PE stamped.

It’s been worth it for me. I instantly got a pay bump, 6 months later got promoted to supervisor, 8 months later got an insanely good offer from a pipeline operator that needed PEs. So in a year and half I’ve almost doubled my income.
Some companies just value it. Also, I’m proud of it as an accomplishment. I had to study hard, but it wouldn’t mean as much if it was easy.

ChemE here. Got my PE 12 years after graduating. The process made me a better technical engineer and filled in a few gaps from undergraduate work. Among my peers it was a distinguishing feature.
I also got my MBA, but that was before any Tom, Dick, and Harry could get one in a few semesters. I value my MBA more than my PE, but only because it gave me the confidence to invest in unconventional ways. That has been worth millions.
Bottom line: YMMV, but it can't hurt you.

My SIL has a Chemical Engineering degree from Lamar. I have a Chemical Engineering degree from LSU. SIL got a professional engineering license. He's the biggest bore I know. Don't be like my SIL.
