Mine used to be cool, would fly us out to Atlanta for the Christmas party if we wanted to go, had outings to Top Golf, dinner with drinks, etc… when we’d go on client trips. All of that changed with Covid, we haven’t traveled for work in 5+ years, and they cut every corner they possibly can now.

I worked a couple of years at a high paying collection agency primarily collecting the loans from the failed S&L’s from the 80’s/90’s. It was a private corporation started over the founders kitchen table and ending up with like 10 floors of the City of Faith hospital across the street from Oral Roberts University.

Every year the company would completely shut down for a week for a company wide, all expenses paid, trip. One year they rented a fleet of buses and took everyone and a guest to Disney World. Another year they rented 3 747’s and flew everyone and a guest to Vegas and gave everyone $1500 as they disembarked plus paid for the hotel. The next year they rented a cruise liner and took everyone and a guest on a Caribbean cruise with the CEO officiating a small mass wedding (4 couples) empowered by the captain.

Then they got exposed for cooking the books and falsifying bond data for the securities they peddled. The owners best friend and company VP took a plea deal and served 3 years in club Fed. The CEO and CFO both barely escaped conviction due to the complexity of the financial arrangements and being unable for a jury to understand it fully. That’s how the company could afford the trips and best benefits I ever heard of.

But it also illustrates how effective team building can be. To this day the crooked executives still have the loyalty of lots of the employees because the employees had it so good. The employees were upset at the Feds and state for causing the company to shutdown.
