What happens if the mother tests positive?

We were told the baby would be quarantined for two weeks or till the mother was negative. We were also told the mother could refuse. I don’t know if that is true but that’s what we were told. It did not come from Womans.

here are the highlights on how we manage a delivering woman who is known SARS CoV2 positive:

Temporary separation is encouraged as the preferred course. Infants are considered as positive and isolated from other infants. Support person/other parent able care for infant while in hospital setting. Breastfeeding through expression of milk and careful handling of bottles is of course allowed as it is not considered to be a contraindication. Infant is tested using in-house test and if positive, provided the mother is not severely ill, they are not separated.

The other option for mothers who do not want separation is rooming in co-isolation. The mother is encouraged to use measures to decrease risk of transmission (hand hygeine/masking/distancing within room, etc). This option would be strongly discouraged with higher risk neonates.

These are highlights only, and are based on CDC and ACOG guidelines which are readily available to look over.

I am assuming you mean during neonatal period...positive tests during antenatal course are handled according to the clinical situation basing decisions on both maternal and fetal indicators of well-being and may or may not involve inpatient care. I will add that there is no evidence of teratogenicity for infection at early gestational ages and little to no evidence for in-utero transmission being a significant route of transmission.
