A Florida woman’s effort to protect herself from domestic violence has become a flashpoint in the debate over gun rights and victims’ safety.
Courtney Irby gave her estranged husband's guns to police after he was charged with domestic violence-aggravated battery, only to find herself arrested for theft.

Courtney Irby spent six days in jail on charges of armed burglary and grand theft after she retrieved the assault rifle and handgun from her husband's apartment and gave them to the Lakeland Police. Joseph Irby was spending one day in jail at the time, accused of ramming into her car after a June 14 divorce hearing.
After her husband's arrest, Courtney Irby petitioned for a temporary injunction for protection, which was granted. Federal law prohibits people under a domestic violence restraining order from possessing guns, but it's up to local law enforcement to enforce it, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
Courtney Irby told police that she believed he wouldn't turn in his guns himself, so she took action. According to her arrest report, she said she entered her husband's apartment through a locked door without his permission and took the guns to a police station.

Police probably lost them in a boating accident.

Title is misleading. She broked into his locked apartment and took his guns. That's called theft

Did she pay for them?
If she did not that is theft.
He deserves every dollar back.
If she felt threatened GO BUY A GUN and be vigilant.
This isnt how it works at all.
I feel threatened by my neighbors Pit Bull that got out and attacked my Shar Pei. I go next door and kill it in its yard before an accident may happen.
The man may have just been pissed and acted retarded and should pay for that crime. Doesnt give her any right to infringe on his property. bullshite. .

Not hard to imagine he escalates the violence from ramming his vehicle to killing her. Especially during what appears to be a bitter divorce.
Tough situation for her to be in overall. No good choices.

Why?
Did he purchase the guns after ramming her?
If he was going to shoot her why not just do it in the first place?

That's not how domestic violence works.
Given the facts of the situation statistically this woman is in real danger of being murdered by this man.

Yea cuz murderers never commit lesser crimes before escalating to murder right?

Normal people do not intentionally ram their vehicle into someone's else's vehicle. Surely you are not stating this is normal, rational behavior of someone of sound mind?

Maybe she hasnt yet pissed him off enough in the divorce proceedings.

Of course not. His actions are definitely cause for concern, but still don't mean he's going to shoot her next week.

So what do you think the chances are of him shooting her when he got out... higher or lower than you shooting your SO in the next week?

Pretty cut and dry case of burglary to me

Higher.
Do you think that authorizes a private citizen to break into his home and steal his property?

Never said it was BUT I think it was possibly a rational thing to do, I think she will rightfully have to deal with the consequences of her actions.
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 and in this use of that rationale maybe nobody gets hurt.

She gave them to the police and now the police have them as required by law. That's certainly not cut and dry burglary.

I dont know about you, but I'd take a burglary charge and a light sentence (assuming clean record and understanding jury/prosecutor) over losing my life
