I think it's been around off and on since the 70's actually. In any case it needs to be done away with. It's a detriment to the actual mission of the Special Forces.

As for Delta vs SEALs. I've known a few Delta guys that were as big a asshats as anyone else. The most soft spoken guys in the SOF community I've met have been CCTs. But they're still Air Force so they don't really count.

I've heard the good and the bad about it. People speak highly of SOPC (which is only for 18X soldiers). It's also a good way to fill undesirable MOSs after they inevitably quit or don't get selected.

I don’t think it is appropriate to compare Delta to “SEALs”. Isn’t it more appropriate to compare SEALs to Army SF and Delta/CAG to DEVGRU/ST6.

Even the the SEAL (numbers not colors) mission is really different from Army SF, so that comparison breaks down quickly.

SEALs and MARSOC are more closely akin, or maybe SEALs and Rangers on the Army side.

Maybe SEALs are like Rangers that swim well.

TBH it makes more sense to give the Marines the SEAL land warfare role and let the SEALS go back to being full time UDTs. Never happen for the same reason each branch has its own air force.

Fun fact: Army SF has more combat divers than there are SEALS

If I had to compare "regular" SEALs to anyone it would be the Rangers.

ST6/Delta are nearly identical in capabilities.

"Regular" Seals are the farm league for ST6 and Rangers are the farm league for Delta.

To my knowledge SF/MARSOC are really close.

Anybody who really knows aint telling the OT. We do know there is, or was, at least one Marine in Delta because he was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions in the Benghazi embassy siege.

I've heard that pretty much anyone can try out but the majority come from the Rangers. Like 70%ish. Most of the rest coming from regular infantry and the SF community to a small degree. But yes, I think they'll take a rockstar Marine or SEAL on occasion.

ETA: I'm not an expert by any means. But I do work with a lot of guys from all of those units in my civilian occupation so I'm passing on solely what I hear. TIFWIW

SF guys tend to go to another Tier 1 unit thats less well known than Delta, or directly to the Agency.

Exactly what I've heard. SF works directly with State on regular and wide basis. So SF tends to be the farm league for Ground Branch.

A little off topic but if you enjoy reading about this kind of stuff try the Adam Brown story. It is a really good read.

I also think Delta is a very long way away from getting the SEALS level of notoriety.

There's a legitimate reason for this. They are so covert they don't exist***

Yep. Most don’t know about them, but when contemplating individual badasses (apart from a group), that is them.

Well their mission doesn't really entail the things movies are made of normally.
