That's sounds right. I grew up in rural north la and have never seen one in the wild.

Southern Mesophytic Forest

that is a link to the description of Southern Mesophytic Forest, which only occurs in West Feliciana Parish.

The topography is quite different up there. Also, the soils are very unique, in that they are loess, which is formed by windblown sediments. Vegetation communities are actually very similar to the Appalachians, but some of the species occur as far north as Michigan.

It is definitely a very unique area, and a PITA to hike if you aren't made for that sort of thing.
