I just thought he should be aware of the possibility that something significant might be wrong with him. I assumed the popping in my hip was something insignificant or easily treatable.

A popping/catching hip can mean alot (Including a torn labrum). If you have good insurance (low physician co-pays) and not some super high deductible go see Misty Suri at Ochsner, get an x-ray and see if he orders an MRI.
