Because it's part of the Harley uniform, just like the gay helmet stickers. As noted, I've been riding Harleys since I was young but that silly shite reflects badly on all of us.

I don't really believe I rev at stop lights. But when I blast them cages on takeoff I truly don't give a frick what people think. I pulled the stock pipes off my Street Glide and went with the Vance & Hines Ground Pounders. Don't really need to rev it to make dogs bark and children cry at stoplights. I love it.
