Why do electric plugs have holes in them?

Read an article a few months ago (hell, it was probably posted here) that said the alphabet people were trying to get the names of pipe fittings changed from male and female to something less gender specific.... or some shite.

From the video the short answer is they used to be used for retention, they remain because "that's what a plug looks like".
