You'd be towards the end of the spectrum though. I'm in the last 4-5 years of GenX and our youngest kid is almost 17. Most people born in the late 60s or 70s don't have young children.

My kids have all thanked me for letting them frick around and find out on their own.
I like the idea of letting them experience consequences that will not have life and career altering effects while they are still in the nest. I don't helicopter parent either.

I grew up in the 80’s-90’s and my parents never knew where or what I was doing. They definitely let me frick around and find out and I did learn a lot of hard life lessons.
I kinda give my kids(19 and 16)the same freedom but different advice but after all it is a different world than it was when I was figuring out life as a 15-25 year old.

You don’t have any data that’s newer than 2014?

When I was in high school, I was on my own for most discretionary spending.
So if I didn’t work, then I had no cash for beer, dates, or gas.
Three of the things on the list may be a direct relationship to these kids not working.

Have you seen what it cost to put a 16 year old boy on your insurance? God forbid you want full coverage... It's like a house note... he isn't interested in driving yet and I am not going to push him. Also, I am not going to push him to get a job, I was working full time before I was out of high school, my first job was at 14 cash under the table... day I turned 16 I got my first legit job... and I haven't stopped working since. Who gives a frick if he loses a couple years of "experience"... Hell my first legit job I was introduced to cigarettes on my first break and I had people buying me alcohol within a month or two...

It doesn’t say have gotten black out drunk and hammered. It says tried alcohol. By the 12th grade, every kid should have had a glass of wine or a beer with their parents or family and have seen how to drink responsibly
Southern white trash mentality right here. There’s a reason the south is last in most education stats, and this is part of the reason why.
I used to work for an lsu fraternity, most college students who binge drink would say they know how to drink responsibly because they’ve had drinks with their parents. This was around the time that that kid died from drinking a few years ago.

Our examples were freaking awful. /thread
So much so that I decided come hell or high water I was going to be an involved parent. The whole quality vs quantity saying is a bunch of nonsense. Just being there is a MASSIVE improvement over how my wife and I were raised. We were practically feral. My mom was a SAHM and still completely uninterested in anything I had going on in my life. Never came to baseball games, never came to football games. Well, that's not exactly true...she did come to one...and sat in the parking lot reading romance novels the whole game.
I couldn't wait to get out of my parents house at 18. Got married and hauled arse at the first opportunity. Still married, raised 3 kids that turned out pretty decent.(check all the boxes) Last 2 will be out of high school next year. Oldest(20) still wants to be around us and still wants to have a relationship. I count that as a win.
